Hypnosis is a state of deep physical and mental relaxation, yet also a state of heightened awareness. It is a natural state which most of us experience as we awaken - we are aware of sounds around us but can't be bothered to move or open our eyes. To reach this stage in the consulting room you'll be given suggestions of progressive relaxation to allow you to relax completely, both physically and mentally.
Contrary to what you might expect, there is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling. You are simply relaxed. You remain fully conscious, aware of everything that is being said and you are in total control of the situation.
Hypnosis is not a therapy in itself; it is what takes place during hypnosis that holds the key to success. The purpose of entering this relaxed state is to lower the threshold to the subconscious mind. This enables habits to be changed by Suggestion Therapy.
In Hypnoanalysis, you will discover the hidden causes of many problems including eating disorders, sexual problems, phobias, nervous anxiety etc. By discovering the cause of the problem you will be able to relieve the symptoms permanently.
Generally speaking if you WANT to be hypnotised then you CAN be hypnotised. If you didn't want to be hypnotised then your subconscious mind would put up so much resistance that there is no way you could relax enough to go 'into' hypnosis. We are working together; I am not going to do anything 'TO' you, just 'WITH' you
The only exception to this would be someone with a learning disability as it would be unethical to make suggestions to someone who is not able to understand the full implications of those suggestions. The same applies to anyone under the influence of alcohol or non prescription drugs.
